What does a dental hygienist do?

A dental hygienist removes tartar and plaque, treats and monitors gum problems (periodontitis), gives brushing instructions and advises on diet and prevention.

How often should you see the dental hygienist?

With healthy gums once or twice a year is often enough. With gum problems, implants or an increased risk, 3 to 4 times a year is often advised. Your dentist or hygienist determines the interval.

What does the dental hygienist cost?

A teeth cleaning costs roughly €40 to €100 per session, depending on duration and practice. Supplementary insurances sometimes reimburse part; a gum treatment costs more.

What is the difference between a dentist and a dental hygienist?

The dentist diagnoses and treats cavities, fillings, crowns and extracts teeth; the dental hygienist focuses on prevention, cleaning and gum care. They often work together in one practice.

What is periodontitis?

An inflammation of the gums and jawbone around the teeth, often with bleeding or receding gums and sometimes loose teeth. Timely treatment by the dental hygienist can prevent further damage.

How do you brush your teeth properly?

Twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and once a day clean between the teeth with interdental brushes or floss. Wait half an hour after acidic drinks before brushing.
