What causes bad breath?
In most cases the cause is in the mouth: coating on the tongue, plaque, gum inflammation or cavities. Dry mouth, smoking, certain food and sometimes conditions of the nose, throat or stomach can also play a role.
Bad breath is annoying but usually easy to solve. Read the causes, what you can do yourself and when to seek help.

Brush twice a day, clean between the teeth daily, scrape or brush the tongue and drink enough water. Stop smoking and eat regularly.
It masks the smell temporarily, but does not solve the cause. Use strongly antiseptic mouthwash only briefly and as advised.
Saliva rinses away bacteria. With a dry mouth (due to medication, mouth breathing or dehydration) bad breath increases. Drinking water and sugar-free chewing gum can help.
If the smell persists despite good oral care, a check-up with the dentist or hygienist is useful. If the mouth is healthy, discuss it with your GP.
